How long does life insurance underwriting take?

Last reviewed: · Big Sioux Life Data Desk

On average, life insurance underwriting takes about 5 days from application to final decision on an accelerated, no-exam path and about 23 days with full traditional underwriting, according to Gen Re’s U.S. Individual Life Accelerated Underwriting Survey. Healthy applicants who qualify for acceleration can have coverage in place in under a week.

The qualifier: those are averages across carriers, and your own timeline depends on which path your application takes and whether anything in your file needs follow-up. A file that requires medical records from a doctor’s office can stretch well past the average, since the insurer is waiting on a third party.

Full underwriting (exam + labs)~23 daysLarger coverage amounts, older ages, or health histories needing review

The faster path is no longer the exception. An average of 59% of individual life insurance applications qualified for accelerated underwriting industry-wide in 2025, according to Gen Re’s December 2025 survey of 30 carriers representing more than 2 million paid policies. Accelerated underwriting replaces the exam with prescription-history checks, motor vehicle records, and predictive models, as described by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Two practical implications:

  1. You usually can’t choose the path directly. Carriers route applications based on age, coverage amount, and what their models see. What you can choose is a carrier whose accelerated program your profile is likely to fit — one of the concrete reasons to compare rather than apply blind.
  2. Speed is not approval. Accelerated underwriting is still underwriting; it can also route you back to a full exam if the data raises questions. Answering every application question completely and accurately is what keeps a 5-day file from becoming a 5-week file.

If your health history is complicated, expect the longer path — and treat that as a feature, since a human underwriter reviewing full context often produces a better offer than a model that only sees flags.

What makes underwriting take longer than average?

The single biggest delay is an attending physician statement — records requested from your doctor's office. Complex health histories, incomplete applications, and labs that need follow-up also push a file past the averages. A clean, complete application with full disclosure up front is the best thing an applicant controls.

Does faster underwriting mean the insurer checks less?

No. Accelerated underwriting still evaluates your health — it substitutes prescription history, motor vehicle records, and data models for the exam, according to the NAIC. Misstatements can still surface and still matter.
